Rob Zombie Weighs In On The Music Industry

In a recent interview with metaledgemag.com, Rob Zombie offered his thoughts on the current state of the music industry insisting that record labels are “overstuffed, overpaid dinosaurs” who “won’t exist” in a few years. Check out part of the interview below:

I think the record labels are dinosaurs waiting to die, and that they’re putting themselves out to pasture,” he said. “They all have a defeatist attitude. And that’s why in another couple of years, they won’t exist. The funny thing is, the record labels for years have done one thing that’s bullsh*t, and that’s blame the artists. ‘It’s the artist’s fault.’ But it’s not the artist’s fault. People love music. People have always loved music, people will always love music — people want more music now than they’ve ever wanted in their lives. Whether it’s through Guitar Hero or their iPhone, or anything — people are music-crazy. But the music industry is always blaming the artists: ‘Oh, it’s not the right single. Oh, it’s not the right album. Oh, it’s not this, it’s not that.’ You know what? They’re full of sh*t. They’re just overpaid and lazy, and it’s all crumbled around them. But the art is not going anywhere. You go out there, and there’s more tours than ever, the shows are bigger than ever, the crowds are crazier than ever, the fans are younger than ever; there’s no lack of demand for the music or the bands or anything. It’s just that the record labels are these overstuffed, overpaid dinosaurs. They’re gonna die. The music’s not going anywhere.

It’s kind of funny we usually discuss these types of threads a ton. This one just said it all I think.

It’s all about life experience of what he had while he was with White Zombie, then he branched out on his own. It’s no wonder. I guess it serves as a history lesson to teach others.

But didn’t KISS give out the same thing about the music industry rap not too long ago?

Ive seen a lot of artists create their own label – korn did it, then i think limp bizkit (gag) did it, then i think staind did it… im sure there are many more – I wonder how their labels stand up compared to all the crap ones. It’d be nice to see more labels that are employee owned because really its an investment both ways for the artist and the label… they both have something to lose if the artists sinks but at least the artist could still have the majority of the control of their careers…

Kiss said something like they wont make a new album cause people will steal it or something like that…. It’s great when artists have their own label they get to make the music they want to make. They dont have to worry about someone telling them what to write or what single to put out. Who knows maybe we will see the big labels fall in the next few years and these artist owned labels thrive and maybe some of these solid indie labels too.

Well, that makes sense then of having creative control. The rest could be this piracy thing that’s still going on over the Internet. If you remember Napster clearly, Metallica went on a rampage to sue them and won. U2 seems to be in the same book like KISS then about downloading. Both bands seem to be well-groomed for the tactic [about on] stealing their music. Not that anybody cares about veteran bands a whole lot these days and the whole stupid downloading thing.
It’s no wonder about the ‘indie’ tag.

Otherwise, you get a stupid mess about music labels being so crappy and disorganized. I think Rob Zombie gets the point.
