Shinedown Front-Man Discusses Soundgarden Reunion

Shinedown front-man Brent Smith spoke recently in an interview with kerrang at the Download Festival about the possibility of a Soundgarden reunion.

There’s talk of a reuniting of Soundgarden in the states soon,” Smith said. “I know actually someone specific who told me that, who is actually specifically in their organization. Kinda told me that they’re talking about it.

    Soundgarden/Shinedown tour next year?

    You heard it here first.

This might sound silly but how would Brent know and have access to that kind of information? I know Cornell has sworn up and down in the past that he will never do Soundgarden again.

As much as I’m sick of Cornell… I’d be excited about this. Not counting on it though.

I’m not counting on it either, but it’s a fun rumor.

I read that Mikel. And my point still stands. How would he know someone in their organization that would have access to something as big as that?

  8. Mikel June 18, 2009 at 3:12 pm #

Because he’s the singer for shinedown? Not trying to be a smarta$$ pen, but you’re making it sound like Shinedown are some local band and it would be crazy for Brent to be on the in with bigger bands.

Well, I was going to say that people get together…people talk….people get drunk…

Sometimes stuff gets let out into the public that shouldn’t.

Based on the news that’s been posted today, I’m under the belief of “never say never”.

I didn’t think that Chris Cornell got along with more than more member of Soundgarden, so chances are slim I’m thinking. I hate Chris’s newest solo album. Timbaland? Dude was high or something.

Im a fan of “never say never” especially when it comes to Soundgarden.

I remember reading about the Creed rumor a few weeks BEFORE it was announced that it was actually offical. I read it, and then couldnt find the source again so I posted in the forum hoping someone knew where the info came from.

I posted in the forum(3 months ago) “Last I heard it was confirmed they would tour again. Rumor was maybe a studio album.”

Pen replied “There was never a rumor for a new studio album, and as far as I’m concerned, the whole reunion thing was a rumor that spread only because it was also rumored that Myles would join Led Zeppelin….. ”

I mean no disrespect in that comment toward you, Pen. Im just saying that not all rumors turn out to be baseless.

This one is a lot hard harder to swallow though, and as said, I wouldnt be holding my breath. I hope there is some truth to it and obviously hope it happens.

And the way Brent talked about it sounded like it was a dream or something.

“So kinda sorta I know this guy that I kinda know specificly as being an actual person that actually is someone that kinda knows the specifics of something I may or may not be mistaken about. This actual person that was in their organization kinda told me that Soundgarden may or may not be talking about sorta doing something specific in actual terms when it comes to kinda talking about it. And also, Im high”

As much as I enjoy (not “love”) Chris’ solo work, I would LOVE a Soundgarden reunion. Never say never, but don’t rule it out.
Still, how would Brent know about it unless he was sort of involved in the talks? I find this slightly ironic, as I remember when Shinedown was new on the scene, a friend of mine thought Brent sounded just like Cornell. (I still don’t really hear it myself.)
My point is, what if he’s hinting that he might be the one getting with Soundgarden a la Led Zeppelin with Myles Kennedy? That would be nuts!

This is so insane, God I hope it’s not just a rumor. Cornell could actually NOT suck!

    Wooo Grunge revolution!

I’m just as excited that they’ll be previewing new songs in November. Yay youtube.

To be fair, Creed rumors had been floating around for a long long time so I think I had a right to think it was just more bogus talk. But everything is eventual. That means yes, a Soundgarden reunion is eventual. Mikel, yes, Brent is the lead singer of Shinedown and people talk, I just think it’s really fucking awkward that he would be the one to say something about this especially considering how vocal Cornell has been on the subject of enjoying his solo career and seeing Soundgarden as a closed book. Plus the way Brent says he heard about it, as Fred pointed out, sounds awkward.

I wouldnt be surprised if Chris hasnt even heard of Shinedown. Also I think a Soundgarden reunion is bad because Chris doesnt have the same voice he used to. He cant hit the high notes anymore to do the old Soundgarden songs properly and you can clearly notice this on Audioslave.

  18. RyLow85 June 19, 2009 at 10:32 am #

I actually think the lead singer from operator sounds more like cornell then Brent, but that’s just me. As far as the reunion goes I would be in favor of it as long as there is a new album too. Maybe the new AIC could be the opening act on a Soundgarden reunion tour? That would be great, but I’m probably just dreaming.

Also does anyone know if Matt Cameron would be part of this proposed reunion, or would he stick with Pearl Jam?

Harddrive radio has been hearing rumors as well:
    http://www.harddriveradio.com/Today-s-Dirt/3803425

“Brent Smith from Shinedown told England’s NME a Soundgarden reunion is definitely in the works and may tour as soon as this year. We’ve been hearing the same rumor (from an inside source as well) and we are patiently waiting for confirmation. Boy, Chris is gonna have to swallow some crow on this one, eh?”
