Freestate Giving Away Debut Album Free

Freestate have announced a new initiative in the spirit of embracing the era of digital music.  Following in the footsteps of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, Freestate are taking a slightly different approach in offering their album ‘Surrender’ for free online.  Rather than releasing the album all at once, the band is offering the album track-by-track on a weekly basis.  Once you sign up, you will receive two tracks off the album per week, until the entire 12 tracks have been sent out.

In addition, those who sign up will also receive high-quality artwork, never-released bonus tracks, exclusive messages from the band, and special invitations to hang out with the band when they make their US debut.  More bonuses and exclusives will also be announced shortly, and the group is also open to suggestions of what the fans might want as part of this program.  Register here to get the album for free.

I bought the album on iTunes a few months ago, but bonus tracks ‘eh!? Nice. Hell I’ll register. :)

While I’m very happy I’m getting the album for free, what is the point of making us wait 6 weeks to get the entire album? How does this benefit the band or the fans who want the album?

Now I’m gonna have to wait 6 weeks to listen to it cause I want to wait until I have the whole thing before I listen to it.

Uhhh…. you’re getting it for free, right?

  4. Well played, Jay… Well played. This is a good album too, I didn’t mind paying for it a couple months ago.

What I want to know is how does this benefit the artist? I mean really, were they just not making it so they are trying to get their name out by putting it up for free? What is the marketing strategy here?

  7. Mikel says:

They are coming out here to play shows, so they want to get their name out there. What better way than putting the music into the hands of the fans.

Well said. I’m not in the music business but it’s quite clear that albums don’t sell much of late, but concerts still do. As said, good way to get their name out there. A known band sells concerts.

Are the bonus tracks also going to be released on a timeline or on signup? I bought the album already, would hate to wait for 7 weeks til the album download has played it’s course..

Like Mikel said, it’s to generate buzz. Also, there might be people
that would buy it if they like it, but aren’t willing to take the chance to shell out the money for an unknown. By getting small tastes, hopefully people who otherwise wouldn’t have taken
the chance will realize it’s great music, and won’t be able to wait to hear the rest. Or they’ll buy the album just to support the band. Or even if they just take the free album, hopefully they’ll recommend it to a friend.

How DARE you sir put Freestate even within the vicinity of untouchable bands like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails! They don’t belong in the same post, even if their cousins got married to one another!!! lol

ehh I’d rather listen to Freestate..

Definitely interested in hearing these b-sides!
